Cartier & Cherry Blossoms

A couple of weeks ago, my partner bought me a pair of pearl earrings from Tiffany’s. My love for jewelry stems from the first red box I received more than a decade ago from Cartier.

Cartier the French Luxury House of Jewels.

Maison Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by master jeweler Louis Francois Cartier. Nestled on Rue de la Paix, the House is renown for being the Royal’s Jewelers and their iconic pieces, the cursed Hope Diamond, the Romanov emerald and the classic panther pieces.

Jewelry and Art are two sides from the same coin.

Over the years, Cartier entered the world of Philanthropy and Art. Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain was established in 1984 by the president of Cartier Internationale, Alain Dominique Perrin. Its aim is to raise awareness for Contemporary Art by organizing exhibitions and performing arts.

Damien Hirst and his Cherry Blossoms

from the Art Newspaper 07/29/2021

Damien Hirst is a famous British artist, first known in the 90s for being part of the Young British Artists (YBA) the latter having revolutionized Contemporary Art as we know it. His work of art reflect the relationship between religion, science and death. His work encompasses paintings, installation art, visual art, sculptures and drawings.

He is famous for “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” 1991 which consists of a submerged tiger shark embedded in a glass panel display.

Another one of his famous signature work is the one that launched him into stardom; the Spot paintings are the most recognizable artworks. In 1988, he drew on the walls of the Warehouse of his Freeze exhibition, two non identical color spots entitles Edge and Row.

On July 6th, 2021, Fondation Cartier launched Damien Hirst’s recent exhibition entitled Cherry Blossoms. True to his life size canvases, these paintings reminisce his famous Spots from the 80s. Critics ran to say that these paintings are “simply beautiful art” . I might add here that his technique is also compared to that of Monet. Impressionism anyone?

As I am writing this post and looking at the work of art, I wish I could have been teleported to view these paintings first hand. The color palette used by the artist are magnetizing. The rich vibrant colors wishes you were back at the start of Spring, the blooming season. While gazing at these paintings, you sense you are looking at the rich blue sky filled with colors (stemming from the Cherry blossoms). This artwork can be considered Decorative Art in Nature. If I could afford a Damien Art it would have been one of the following pieces.

It took three years for Damien Hirst to finish his 107 pieces, from which 30 are exhibited until January 2nd 2022. For the likes of us, who live an ocean away, if you are in Paris and into art, attend this exhibition. It would be one of the many upcoming from our favorite British contemporary artist.

In other news, Damien Hirst signed the cover of Drake’s new album “Certified Lover” with images of 12 pregnant women, adding to his list of controversial work. Is Hirst on a quest to immortalize his Spots paintings in future resembling work of arts?
